  What is the deal with Moses? A rant on absurdity in the Bible.

  the other day i was reading about moses and i came to the very popular part of the golden calf.

  but now, with a little maturity and freedom from the clutches of witness thought i can see some terrible problems with the bible.

  in the beginning of exodus 32 god is talking to moses and sees that the israelites have made a calf out of gold and they are using it as their god.

  Another absurdity of the golden calf story is that the people were punished for doing something they didn't know was forbidden. The israelites had been in Egypt without knowledge of the hebrew god and had no idea what his requirements were. Moses hadn't even come down the mountain with the commandments yet and they couldn't even see their wrongdoing in retrospect cos he smashed them.

  The census taking by David is a strange one too. There are two conflicting scriptures about who actually told David to take the census in the first place. In Samuel it says god told him to take it and in Chronicles it says satan.

  i was just pondering how the wts has, for over a century, been able to convince people to do what is contrary to their best interests with fear tactics that armageddon is coming soon, and i came up with what is going to be my pet phrase for a while:.

  "only religion has the power to compel people to embrace sheer stupidity in the name of faith.

  " ~ scully, december 28, 2006. i googled it, and didn't see that anyone else has claimed it, so until someone else finds an attribution for it, i'm claiming it as my own.

  My grandad had some idiosyncratic sayings that I never knew where they came from

  "There's more out than in" - Inference being that there's more mental people walking the streets than there are locked up

  "Get back in the cheese" - Get off your high horse and do some graft

  "Keep your sausages skinned or keep your onions peeled" - Keep an eye out for dropped change on the ground

  He's got a head like a fifty pence piece!" - While watching football and a player misses heading an open goal. 50p's are heptagon shaped.

  "If you put his brain in a matchbox it would rattle" - nuff said

  "You can't put it where it never was" - Some people are just plain stupid

  As well as the sensible reasons from highlander it's also a clever spin on an old Woody Allen joke

  Oh? Please Explain!

  It was a joke that Allen had in his standup routine about Jewish girls not believing in sex after marriage.

  The comments about JW's having badly matched marriages is so true. I saw so many oddly matched couples who tied the knot just because they were desperate for the sexual experience.

  There is NO sex before marriage...............and some times very little after.

  Very little after? I don't understand, why would there be little afterward? Is it because of their policing of the bedroom?

  Knocking on Doors on Holidays

  did anyone else's congregation "strongly encourage" this practice?

  when i was a worshiping rusell.... jehovah.

  i felt sick to my stomach and disgusted that these people had absolutely no consideration for the beliefs or practices of others.

  My parents went out on field service Xmas eve and my mum wore a long bright red coat. She looked like Mrs Santa!
  She said every householder had been nice to them and wished them a merry xmas (they obviously ignored the content of the mags which probably denounced xmas)
  I think she might have done it on purpose cos even though she's a staunch JW she doesn't really enjoy field service at the best of times and the coat made her appearance on the doorstep at Xmas a bit more bearable.

  just watched it about an hour ago.

  i know that it's old news that he got involved with the organization while his career was basically in a free fall, but now that he is enjoying some success again, i am very surprised that he is still claiming to even be a jw.

  On a general point this habit of thanking god for awards, sporting achievements etc seems to be real American affliction recently. It really gets on my bloody nerves
  I'm sure the founding fathers of the US like Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Paine would turn in their graves at the thought of US citizens enjoying the freedoms they inaugorated slipping out of the enlightenment into unthinking religiosity and vaingloriously invoking god as reasons for their success and thereby damning their fellow contestants to be lesser people and unworthy of the godly help they received.

  A BBC series on the history of Atheism that's currently on youtube discussed 'belief' and the meaning of it. Unfortunately I can't remember which episode the discussion was in. It's an interesting set of programs though and well worth a watch.

  It's called in-text advertising. The idea is it's less intrusive to the look and feel of the website than banner ads or google footers etc. Or you could use both like on JWD

  Looks pretty cool. Although the words Michael Bay and Alex Kurtzman don't fill me with great confidence hopefully Spielberg can keep them in line.

  I always thought the Transformers toys were the best but the Gobots series had better animation.
